[Tutorial] Splatter Banner ft. Taeyeon

Brushes used in this tutorial can be found here post. Tutorial is not recommended for beginners and or those not familiar with the tools in Adobe Photoshop because I assume you know what tools I’m referring to and how to use them. This is more of a tutorial / guide to show you how exactly I make my banners step by step.

Splash Brushes

Program: Photoshop CS+
Content: 10 Large brushes
Note: These are most suitable for large pieces. Can be used to smugde or brush a canvas. You can use them for minor photoshop airbrushing as well. Best with black on white, or any dark colors on white.
To use: Extract the .Zip file and load the brush (.abr) document in Photoshop.

Blast from the past: Drawing Edition

I love uploading my works to a folder or an account just so that I always have a collection to look at years later. I just went through and updated the traditional art section, specifically the drawings and paintings section. While going through my folders, I found a lot of my old doodles and works that I want to show, but is not portfolio appropriate.

I want to share some of my first drawings and paintings, as well as some random arts that I’ve made in the last 4 years since I’ve been drawing and making graphics.

Warning: Many many (horrible) pictures ahead…

I first started drawing around late 2006 when I took art in 9th grade. I’ve actually been interested in art before cause of deviantart, but I never really tried–if I did, it wasn’t realism. I started off with like 3-4 drawings of Anime/games such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Ball Z. It’s because I liked the cover and character art. I didn’t really draw that much, maybe once every 2 months, but my improvements were drastic even though I didn’t practice. A good break always help me.

These are some of the more decent drawings I that liked enough to scan.

Cloud <3 Final Fantasy VII was a nice game.

Yuna and the guy from //hack sign. My brother spilled water on Yuna’s face ><

Now time for some realism. My first 2 attempt at it looked cartoonish. Obviously I only spent 1 or so hours on these.

Probably my best first attempt at realism, cause it really looks like the person I was drawing.

This is towards the end of 2006, in like November. Things are starting to look up.
Sucks I never got to finish the first one.

First finished portrait, though I don’t like it.

I really like this one, and I worked on this right after the drawing above with color pencil. (End of 2006)

First good portrait of BoA. This was probably in January of 2007.

Now lets compare all of this to my most popular drawing of Song Hye Kyo in May of 2008.

Yeah, big difference. I think it’s all due to the fact that I spend a lot more time on these (patience is a virtue), and I discovered tissues for shading and blending, oh and kneaded eraser.

A lot of people tell me they can’t draw, but if you have the patience and is willing, I’m sure you can draw too. I can draw what I see, but I lack creativity.

This video isn’t exactly a tutorial, but more of a guide. You guys can see how I make my banners. I use mostly custom brushes and smudging techniques.

Abstract Banner Video Tutorial

….ok, it’s not exactly a tutorial since I’m just showing you how I do some of my banners and not teaching you. But you get the point. This video is meant as a guide more than anything. It utilizes one of the textures from my resource from my previous post. In this post, you will also find my older smudge banner tutorial and the smudging brushes that I use. Scratch that, I’ll post it up after this.

And I realized that I can’t plan out a tutorial and then do it, because I always either forget what I did or I don’t want to redo the banner. I made these two banners below with the purpose of planning out my tutorial, but I failed. The difference with these banners below is that instead of using angle strokes, I used twirl. I also used another texture for the bg.

New portrait after half a year

My aunt requested a portrait of her almost 2 years ago, but I never got around to it until now. I like it, though I got irritated by the skin so I kind of messily did it.

I finally updated the tags page a few days ago with signatures/tags/banners, whatever you want to call them, from 2009. I think I have improved from 2007, but there are still room for improvements since there are a lot of rotten signatures in these batches.

I haven’t made many this year. I would say that I’ve made maybe only 4, which is sad, really sad. I blame first year of college. Oh well, I plan to make more. Mostly of SNSD/Girls’ Generation (a top girl group in Korea). I’ve been obsessed with them recently, especially Tiffany and Taeyeon.

What to look forward to…maybe?

My summer started on May 13th, but I haven’t done much at all ever since then. I made 2-3 client templates and worked on one theme that is still in progress to be coded by Creative-Le. A day ago, I started on another template, but today, I decided that I have some things I need to do before that.

Those things include drawing a portrait, finishing a large canvas piece that I started like four months ago, as well as making some resources. I have my doubts on whether or not I’ll finish though, because on the 8th, I have to start doing some research and writing reviews for my research lab.

Anyway, here is a preview of the themes I worked on.

This is the stock that I started to use for the large canvas earlier this year. Look forward to the piece.
